NSW First in Course – Seraina Elia of Lumen Christi

Congratulations to Seraina Elia of Lumen Christi College in Pambula on a magnificent HSC accomplishment achieving first place in NSW for Ancient History.

Principal Steven Centra said Seraina called from the awards ceremony today (Wednesday 13/11), and whilst she was ecstatic to be presented her award by the NSW Premier, she was extremely eager to contact her teacher, Ms Nicol, to express her thanks.

“This is testament to her humble nature and sense of gratitude. All at Lumen are extremely proud of this outstanding achievement. Seraina is an extremely diligent student who quietly goes about her business,” Mr Centra said.

Head of HSIE and Seraina’s Ancient History Teacher Tara Nicol said that Seraina is younger than her peers, which makes this achievement all the more important.

“Seraina has developed all the tools for her own success - she has a genuine thirst to discover the meaning of history. She is an independent learner, she pays attention to detail and looks for ways to value add to her understanding. One of Seraina’s strengths is seeking those around her who can extend her knowledge and refine her skills.

“Seraina’s performance in Ancient History is just one indicator that we as teachers are just facilitators of learning. As we teach students such as Seraina about what inspires us most, the relationship is reciprocated by their own motivation to find connections in their learning. Seraina thrives on intelligent discussion of the purposes of history and how history influences the present.

“Seraina’s success is also a mirror for us to evaluate our own success as a College. We strive constantly to improve our pedegogy and our relationships with our students - this is one indicator that we are on the right path. As our college motto is ‘Shine your Light’. Seraina, like all our students, shines very brightly indeed. I’m personally so very proud and humbled by her achievement and talents. I cannot wait to congratulate her in person.”
